Striking a Balance Between Family and Triathlon
Kirsten’s journey into triathlons began during work travels when she realized running required nothing more than a pair of shoes—no gym, no special equipment. After completing and enjoying her first marathon, she moved to Boulder, Colorado, where the vibrant triathlon community inspired her to dive deeper into the sport. She joined Team in Training, a group that participated in events together, ultimately encouraging her to take on the challenge of an Ironman competition.
For Kirsten, success is all about balance—harmonizing her training and racing with her family’s happiness. She prioritizes her family, carefully planning races around their schedules and maintaining a rhythm that keeps her passion for the sport alive. This balanced approach has been the foundation of her long-term dedication and success in triathlons.
A pivotal moment came during a sprint race when her husband encouraged her to push beyond her comfort zone. She finished second in her age group, an achievement that sparked a new level of confidence. This experience shifted her perspective from merely finishing races to striving for performance and growth. With a renewed focus and strategic training, Kirsten became more competitive, and driven to maximize her potential in the sport she loves.
Kirsten’s Race Goals While Overcoming Illness
This year, Kirsten focused on improving her running consistency and avoiding over-biking to prevent injuries that had previously hindered her performance. She shared her recovery journey from a plantar plate tear, labrum tears, and a loose SI joint, crediting a regenerative orthopedic doctor and stem cell treatments for helping her regain strength. By the summer 2023, she was back to running confidently.
Kirsten also uncovered a hidden obstacle: mold exposure. Severe hormonal imbalances, immune issues, and recurring injuries led her to a urine test, which revealed high levels of mycotoxins. Investigating further, she discovered mold in her home. Her recovery involved sauna therapy, glutathione, and supplements to eliminate toxins—a process that, while lengthy, resolved her health issues and even reversed an autoimmune marker linked to soft tissue problems.
Through this experience, Kirsten emphasizes the importance of addressing root causes, like mold exposure, and prioritizing recovery to maintain long-term health and excel in her sport.
