How Diana Became a Triathlete
Diana Hassel’s triathlon journey began in 1997 during her surgical residency in equine surgery at UC Davis. While involved in the master swimming program at the Davis Athletic Club, she was inspired by the triathletes she met. Motivated by their dedication, she bought a bike, joined a running club, and signed up for her first Sprint triathlon, the Golden State Triathlon.
Although new to the sport and unfamiliar with concepts like “brick” training (the bike-to-run transition), Diana gave it her all and loved the experience. That first race sparked a passion for triathlon that has continued to drive her ever since.
For Diana, success in triathlons—and life—is about setting and achieving goals, big or small. Her goal-setting mindset began at 12, when she set her sights on becoming an equine veterinarian—a dream she ultimately achieved. This drive has fueled her throughout her career and triathlon journey.
Diana’s Tips for Triathletes
Diana offers several key tips for triathletes, particularly those just starting out or looking to make the most of their resources. One of her top pieces of advice is to join a triathlon community, either in person or online. Being part of a local or virtual group provides support, access to shared resources, and opportunities to borrow or receive equipment, which can save money. Building relationships within these communities can also lead to valuable connections.
She also recommends cross-disciplinary training for long-term success. Diana encourages athletes to try other sports, such as cycling or running races, to improve overall fitness and specific triathlon skills like bike handling and running endurance while keeping training fun and varied.
For sustained success, Diana emphasizes two key factors: consistency and listening to your body. Maintaining a steady training routine and addressing injuries early can prevent setbacks and ensure continued performance.
Hassle-Free Triathlon Training
Diana Hassel began coaching after friends, inspired by her success in the Ironman and 70.3 races, asked for her help preparing for their own events. With a background in physiology, anatomy, and veterinary science, she already had a solid understanding of sports science. Her coaching interest grew when Ironman U introduced a certification program, which she pursued eagerly.
Diana also embraced the Tridot platform, an AI-based tool, integrating it into her coaching to provide data-driven insights and personalized training plans. She finds fulfillment in coaching by connecting with athletes beyond workouts, focusing on swimming technique, running form, nutrition, and mental training. This holistic approach helps athletes reach their full potential.
As she transitioned out of teaching veterinary medicine, Diana launched Hassle-Free Triathlon Training, a website dedicated to guiding athletes toward success.
