From One, Inspired the Aid to Many

Bob Babbitt co-founded the Challenged Athletes Foundation in response to the life-altering injury of Jim MacLaren, a former Yale football player who became an amputee after a motorcycle accident, and later a quadriplegic after being struck by a van during a race. Despite his challenges, Jim accomplished remarkable athletic feats, running a 3:16 marathon and completing the Ironman World Championship with a prosthetic leg, proving the power of sport in overcoming adversity.

Initially, the goal was simple: raise $25,000 to buy Jim a van with hand controls to restore his independence. But, after seeing the broader need because health insurance doesn’t cover adaptive sports equipment, Bob and his team realized many others were facing the same barriers. This led to the creation of CAF to ensure that anyone with a physical challenge could pursue sport as a path to independence and self-worth.

Since then, CAF has grown from a single fundraiser to an organization that’s granted over $191 million, providing 52,000+ grants to adaptive athletes in 105 sports worldwide.

Greater Technology means a Rising Cost of Aid

One of the biggest challenges the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) faces is keeping up with the rising costs of adaptive sports equipment as technology advances. While it’s exciting that more sports and better gear are available for people with physical challenges, the price tags can be overwhelming. Some handcycles and prosthetic legs cost $20,000 or more. As awareness of CAF grows, so does the number of grant requests, but limited funding means they can’t support everyone. On top of that, CAF works hard to provide more than just financial help, they connect athletes with resources, specialists, and a supportive community. Maintaining this level of care takes a lot of effort, and building long-term partnerships is essential but not always easy.

From Intent Comes Impact

Bob Babbitt’s message about fundraising is rooted in the idea that anyone can make a difference. An impact often starts with a small, personal gesture. He says the most meaningful and successful fundraising efforts usually come from individuals who feel inspired and take initiative in their own way. Bob embraces this “fundraise your way” concept because it reflects a willingness to turn passion into purpose.

He shares powerful stories about people who want to start small by helping one person, and spontaneous moments inspire charities, documentaries, financial organizations, and global changes. He illustrates that you don’t always need a formal plan or a big organization behind you to create change; you just need to demonstrate care and take action. When you do something from the heart and align it with purpose, people will join in and amplify it. Plans may shift and evolve, but if the intent is right, impact becomes a possibility.
